How to Split a Backpacking Route Into Days (Camp Placement 101)
Most backpacking trip plans start with mileage and end with a vague intention to “camp somewhere around mile 14.” That works fine, until it doesn’t. You reach mile 14, it’s a steep sidehill with no flat ground, the water source is 0.3 miles off-trail and dropping, and the next decent camp is 2 miles further than anyone has energy for.
The craft of camp placement is mostly invisible when done well. Here’s how to do it deliberately.
Start with water, not mileage
The single biggest mistake in splitting a route into days: choosing mileage first and hoping the camps work out. On a well-watered trail in a temperate range, you can get away with this. On drier terrain (high desert, late-season Sierra, much of the Southwest) it’ll put you in trouble.
The more reliable approach is to mark your confirmed water sources on the map first, then place your camps at or near them, then look at the resulting day lengths and decide whether they’re tolerable.
If Day 2 comes out to 17 miles because the only good camp with water is 17 miles from Day 1’s camp, that’s your signal: either split with a shorter-water carry in the middle, or reconsider whether this route is right for your group right now.
What makes a site legal
“Legal” varies by agency and wilderness area, and getting it wrong has consequences. A few consistent principles apply across most managed backcountry:
Distance from water. The Leave No Trace standard is 200 feet (about 70 adult steps) from any lake, stream, or spring. Many specific wilderness areas impose stricter rules; 500 feet is not uncommon. Check the managing agency’s regulations for your specific area.
Established vs. dispersed sites. Some high-traffic areas designate specific campsites and prohibit camping anywhere else. Others are fully dispersed (camp anywhere that meets the setback rules). Know which you’re in. Designated sites in popular wilderness areas often book out months in advance; dispersed areas give you more flexibility but require more judgment.
High-impact zones. Fragile alpine areas like tundra, meadows, snowfields, and sandy cryptobiotic soil can take decades to recover from a single poor tent placement. On durable surfaces (rock, gravel, pine duff, sand away from streams), the impact is far lower. If in doubt, on rock.
Group size limits. Many wilderness areas cap group sizes at 6–10 people, and some designated sites have tent limits. This matters if you’re planning with a larger crew.
The elevation pacing problem
Miles lie. A 12-mile day with 1,000 feet of gain is a different animal from a 12-mile day with 4,500 feet of gain, and both are completely different from a 12-mile day with 3,000 feet of gain in the first 4 miles followed by a long descent.
A rough rule of thumb that holds up reasonably well for planning purposes: add 30 minutes for every 1,000 feet of gain to your flat hiking pace. So if you’d normally cover 3 miles per hour on flat ground with a loaded pack, a 12-mile day with 3,000 feet of gain is roughly a 6-hour day, not a 4-hour day.
More useful than the calculation is looking at the elevation profile and asking: where are the big climbs, and when in the day do they hit? Crossing a high pass at 11,000 feet is fine in the morning when you’re fresh and the weather is typically stable. Hitting that same pass at 2 p.m. in Colorado in July, with afternoon thunderstorms building, is a different situation. Plan climbs and high exposed terrain for the morning.
Similarly, your final camp should not be an exhausted slog. Knowing you have an easy 4-mile approach to camp on a strenuous day gives you a psychological cushion.
Matching daily mileage to your group
A comfortable daily range for a loaded beginner on moderate terrain is somewhere between 8 and 12 miles. For a fit, experienced group moving efficiently, 15–18 miles is reasonable. Past 20 miles per day in rough terrain, you’re doing something closer to a trail run than a backpacking trip, and the experience of being in the wilderness largely disappears.
A few honest calibrations:
Day 1 is often short. You drive to the trailhead, deal with logistics, start in the afternoon. Build a shorter first day rather than a normal one. It gives you time to dial in pack fit and set up camp before dark.
Day 2 is often the hardest. The novelty has worn off, the soreness is setting in, and you haven’t adapted yet. If there’s a long or strenuous day in the itinerary, I’d put it on Day 3 or later, not Day 2.
Build in buffer. A day that ends at 4 p.m. is much better than one that ends after dark. If you’re pushing to make camp every night, something goes wrong and there’s no margin.
Placing camps: the practical sequence
- Map confirmed water sources along the route.
- Mark potential camp areas: designated sites if the area uses them, or general zones of durable ground and legal setback from water.
- Draft an itinerary by placing camps at intersections of “near water” and “reasonable day length.”
- Look at what each day’s elevation profile looks like and whether the climbs fall in sensible places.
- Identify the toughest day and make sure the camp before it is early and restful.
- Check that no camp puts you in a committed position if the weather turns: can you bail to a trailhead or shelter from that camp if necessary?
This is genuinely tedious to do by hand across a topo, a water report, and a mileage log simultaneously. A few camp placement heuristics worth keeping
Camp high, sleep warm. Cold air drains into valleys overnight. A camp 200–300 feet above the valley floor can be noticeably warmer than one at the bottom, even if it means slightly more effort to get there.
Wind exposure matters at elevation. A beautiful open ridgetop camp that looks stunning in calm weather can be brutal in a storm. Check the forecast and think about how exposed your site is.
Think about morning light. An east-facing camp warms up early. A west-facing site stays cold until midmorning. This seems minor until you’re standing in frozen boots trying to pack up camp at 7,000 feet.
Leave the best site for the people who’ll camp there after you. Pack out everything. Don’t trench around tents. Don’t scrape ground cover flat. The site you leave should be indistinguishable from one that’s never been used.
Camp placement is one of those skills that feels subtle until you’ve had a miserable night on a bad site. Get the water and legality right first, build the elevation and mileage around that foundation, and pay attention to what the terrain is actually telling you. The day-by-day math follows from the camps, not the other way around.
